The Leica 3D Disto is a professional laser measurement system designed for 3D coordinate capture in construction and layout applications. Unlike handheld laser distance meters, the 3D Disto is a motorized, tripod-mounted instrument capable of measuring and projecting points in three dimensions across an entire room.
The main unit houses a rotating laser head, an internal motor, and wireless communication hardware. It measures distances and angles simultaneously to calculate precise 3D coordinates. The unit is controlled entirely through the companion software running on a connected Windows PC or tablet — there are no controls on the device itself beyond the power button.
The 3D Disto mounts on a standard surveying tripod via a tribrach (leveling base). Precise leveling is critical for accurate measurements. The tribrach typically includes a circular bubble level to assist with setup. Leica offers compatible tripods and tribrachs, but standard surveying-grade equipment with a 5/8” thread will also work.
The 3D Disto is powered by a rechargeable lithium-ion battery pack. Battery life varies depending on usage but typically supports several hours of active measurement. Always ensure the battery is fully charged before fieldwork.
A dedicated battery charger is included with the unit. The 3D Disto does not charge via USB — the battery must be charged using the provided charger.
Common accessories available for the Leica 3D Disto include additional battery packs for extended fieldwork, carry cases for transport and protection, and spare tribrachs for multi-instrument setups. Contact Advanced Dimensions for accessory availability and pricing.
The Leica 3D Disto is frequently confused with Leica’s handheld DISTO laser distance meters (such as the DISTO D2, D5, or X6). These are separate products:
See Leica 3D Disto vs. Leica DISTO: What’s the Difference? for a full comparison.
All measurement and layout tasks are performed through the Leica 3D Disto Windows software, which must be installed on a compatible PC or tablet. The hardware cannot be operated standalone. A valid CCP license key is required to run the software. See What is the CCP? for details.
