How to Take a Basic Measurement with a Leica DISTO
Overview
The Leica DISTO handheld laser distance meter makes it easy to measure distances, areas, and volumes with a single button. This guide covers the basic measurement workflow that applies to most DISTO models.
Before You Start
- Insert or charge the batteries.
- Power on the device by pressing the power / measure button (typically labeled with a red dot or triangle icon).
- Choose a reference edge: most DISTO models allow you to measure from the front or back of the unit. Check your model's manual for how to toggle this.
Taking a Distance Measurement
- Hold the DISTO flat against the starting surface (e.g., a wall) with the laser aperture facing your target.
- Press the measure button once to activate the laser pointer.
- Aim the red laser dot at your target surface.
- Press the measure button again to capture the reading.
- The distance is displayed on the screen.
Measuring Area and Volume
Most DISTO models include dedicated area and volume measurement modes:
- Area: Press the area function button, then take two measurements (length × width). The device calculates the result automatically.
- Volume: Press the volume function button, then take three measurements (length × width × height).
Tips for Accurate Results
- Measure to a solid, flat, matte surface for best laser return.
- Avoid measuring through glass or at very shallow angles to a surface.
- In bright sunlight, the laser dot may be hard to see — move to shade or use a target card if available.
- Keep the device steady when pressing the measure button to avoid movement errors.
