Troubleshooting DISTO Measurement Errors

Troubleshooting DISTO Measurement Errors

Overview

If your Leica DISTO is displaying error messages or giving unexpected readings, this guide covers the most common causes and fixes.

Common Error Messages

"- - - -" or No Reading Displayed

Cause: The laser could not detect a return signal from the target surface.

Fix:

  • Ensure the target is within range (0.05 m to the maximum range of your model).
  • Avoid measuring to transparent surfaces (glass, water) or highly reflective surfaces (mirrors, polished metal).
  • Use a target card or piece of white paper if the surface is very dark or at a steep angle.
  • Clean the laser aperture with a soft cloth.

"ERR" or Error Code Displayed

Cause: A device fault has been detected. Common causes include temperature out of range, hardware self-test failure, or an interrupted measurement.

Fix:

  • Power off the device and wait 30 seconds, then power on again.
  • If the device was used in extreme cold or heat, allow it to acclimate to room temperature before retrying.
  • If the error persists after a restart, the device may require service.

Inconsistent or Jumping Readings

Cause: The device is moving during measurement, or the surface is not providing a stable reflection.

Fix:

  • Hold the device firmly against the starting surface and keep it still when pressing the measure button.
  • Use a tripod or wall bracket if available for long-distance shots.
  • Measure to a flat, solid, matte surface.

Readings Are Consistently Off by a Fixed Amount

Cause: The reference edge offset may be set incorrectly.

Fix: Check whether the measurement reference is set to the front or back of the device. Refer to your model's manual for how to toggle the reference edge setting.

Device Shows Battery Symbol and Powers Off

Cause: Battery is depleted.

Fix: Replace or recharge the batteries. Use only batteries of the type specified for your DISTO model.

When to Contact Support

If the device continues to error after replacing batteries and attempting a power cycle, it may have an internal hardware fault. Contact Advanced Dimensions support with your device model and serial number.
