Getting Started with the Leica 3D Disto

What is the Leica 3D Disto?

The Leica 3D Disto is a laser-based measurement device that measures the 3D coordinates of any point in space. It projects a laser dot onto a surface and calculates the precise X, Y, Z position of that point relative to the instrument. It is commonly used in interior construction, fit-out work, building layout, and point transfer between floors or walls.

System Requirements

  • Windows-based PC or tablet (Windows 7 or later recommended)
  • Bluetooth connection capability
  • Active Customer Care Package (CCP) and valid license key (see: What is the CCP?)

Software Installation

  1. Download the 3D Disto software from the Leica Geosystems website or use the installation media provided with your unit.
  2. Install the software on your Windows device.
  3. When prompted, enter your license key. If you do not have a valid key, see Invalid License Key Error on Leica 3D Disto.

Connecting the Device

  1. Power on the 3D Disto unit.
  2. Enable Bluetooth on your PC or tablet.
  3. Open the 3D Disto software and use the connection wizard to pair with your instrument.
  4. Once connected, the software will confirm the instrument status and you can begin measuring.

Basic Workflow

  1. Set up the instrument – Place the 3D Disto on a stable surface or tripod. The built-in compensator will handle leveling.
  2. Define your coordinate system – Aim at reference points to establish your working plane.
  3. Measure points – Aim the laser at any target and capture the 3D coordinates with a single click.
  4. Export data – Measured points can be exported to DXF or other CAD formats for use in design software.
