Upgrading from Leica 3D Disto Software v5 to v6

Upgrading from Leica 3D Disto Software v5 to v6

Overview

Version 6 of the Leica 3D Disto software introduced significant new features including Layers and CAD Tools arcs. However, upgrading from v5 to v6 is not a free update — it requires purchasing a new Customer Care Package (CCP) that includes a v6 license key. Your existing v5 key will not activate the v6 software.

What's New in v6 vs. v5

See the full breakdown here: 3D Disto Software: What's New in Version 6 (vs. Version 5)

The two headline additions are:

  • Layers — CAD-style layer organization for your measurements. In v5, all measured points and lines existed in a flat, single-layer environment. In v6, you can create named layers, assign colors, toggle visibility, and use layer templates to standardize workflows across projects. This is particularly useful on complex fit-out or construction jobs where multiple trades or phases need to be separated visually.
  • CAD Tools Arcs — the ability to measure and lay out curved walls and surfaces, not just straight lines.

Do I Need a New CCP to Upgrade?

Yes. A new CCP is required to move from v5 to v6. The CCP provides your v6 license key and one year of Leica support access. Without it, the v6 software will display a license error on launch.

If your CCP is current but you're still on v5, contact us — we can confirm whether your key is v5 or v6 and advise accordingly.

Step-by-Step Upgrade Process

  1. Purchase a new CCPBuy the 3D Disto Customer Care Package. After purchase, provide us with your 3D Disto serial number and we will submit it to Leica to generate your v6 license key.
  2. Receive your v6 license key — We will deliver your key by email within 24 hours of receiving your serial number.
  3. Download the v6 installer — Get it from the Leica 3D Disto Learning Centre.
  4. Uninstall v5 — Go to Windows Settings → Apps, find the 3D Disto v5 software, and uninstall it. Reboot your PC.
  5. Install v6 — Run the v6 installer as administrator and follow the prompts.
  6. Enter your v6 license key — On first launch, enter the new key you received. Your software is now fully activated.

Will My v5 Projects Open in v6?

Yes. Existing v5 project files are compatible with v6. Your measurements and data will carry over. However, v5 does not have Layers, so all imported data will appear in a default layer in v6 — you can then organize it as needed.

Can I Run v5 and v6 Side by Side?

This is not recommended and is not officially supported by Leica. Uninstall v5 before installing v6 to avoid conflicts.
