Auto Focus Not Working / Unable to Capture vTargets or Use vPen

Overview

If your iCON iCS cannot capture vTargets or the vPen is not functioning despite good lighting conditions, the instrument may have an auto focus hardware failure. Follow the diagnostic procedure below before contacting support.

Auto Focus Diagnostic Test

This test should be performed and screen-recorded so the results can be reviewed by the support team.

Before You Begin

  1. Enable the Android Status Bar: Menu > Settings > Systems.
  2. Start a screen recording: swipe down twice and tap Screen Recording.

Test at ~1 Meter Distance

  1. Go to Measure mode > Any Target > Crosshair (red laser should be OFF).
  2. Point the instrument at a surface approximately 1 meter away.
  3. Use the fine adjustment controls to center the crosshair on the target.
  4. Zoom in to maximum zoom and confirm the image is sharp and in focus.
  5. Attempt a measurement.

Test at ~10 Meters Distance

  1. Repeat the same steps at approximately 10 meters distance.
  2. Confirm the image sharpness at maximum zoom.
  3. Attempt a measurement.

Generate Logs

  1. After completing both tests, generate diagnostic log files from within iCON Trades while connected to the iCS.
  2. Stop the screen recording.

What the Results Mean

  • Image is blurry or cannot achieve sharp focus at either distance: This indicates an auto focus hardware failure. The instrument will need to be returned for service.
  • Focus is fine but measurement still fails: Please send the logs and screen recording to support for further analysis.

Next Steps

Send the screen recording and log files to Advanced Dimensions support. If auto focus hardware failure is confirmed, an RGA (Return Goods Authorization) will be initiated.
